Fashioning Winter

December 23, 2014

Yesterday I went to see the Fashioning Winter exhibition at Somerset House. The admission was free so I wasn't expecting too much, however I did expect to see various displays of mannequins and clothes. To my great disappointment there was in fact very minimal on display. The exhibition was scattered around Somerset House and each location (of nine) featured a brief description about the display. The displays included:
Winter Mode by Rebecca Arnold
Skating in Streatham by Beatrice Behlen
Skating on Film by Caroline Evans
Hobble-skirted Skaters by Professor Amy De La Haye
White Perspectives by Sofia Hedman and Serge Martynov
Fashioning Narratives by Shonagh Marshall
Greetings for Christmas: Angus McBean by Alistair O'Neill
Moving Mountains by Tory Turk
Winter in Wartime by Benjamin Whyman

The best display was 'White Perspectives' as there were mannequins positioned down the spiral staircase which added a nice touch. The rest of the display had little or no complementary information other than what was written on the wall for each and I was therefore quite disheartened by the lack of visuals involved with the exhibition, and it certainly contrasted with what I thought the exhibition would be like. I suppose it was justified by it's free admission.
